The RPGmaker style is nothing new, but the combat is interesting and stays fairly difficult throughout. The ability to learn new passive and active abilities through equipment makes the combat rewarding and the grinding brief. Backtracking exists, but again, it is richly rewarded with both material and plot bonuses.Speaking of which, I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and the lead characters, though I'm hardly impartial as a longtime fan of Sierra Lee's work. It did feel a bit short, but (like many others in the reviews) I'm comparing it to The Last Sentinal, which is an extraordinaly, sprawling monster of detailed content and complex choices that is more than worth your time to check out if you enjoy Desecration. Explore carefully, enjoy the smut, and earn yourself the best ending you can.. Great game, as typical of Sierra's style; especially if you like non-standard stories and new perspectives. The Steam version is censored, but there's a patch available to fix that here: https:\/\/the-last-sovereign.blogspot.com\/p\/desecration-of-wings.html. Very good game. likely one of the best RPG maker games i've ever played. one cirtical note however, you need to use the upgrage system that comes with the gear. the game doesn't really exsplain this to you and not using it makes a hell of a lot of trouble. + intresting story, qualty art (even better with the patch), very good combat and upgrade systems.- art can get kinda samey good quialty not much verity, endings are sort of the same (both are good, but not that differnt), lack of choices through the story (even small choices like in conversations.)in my view $15 is rather cheap for this. enjoy!. Fun game with realistic relationships. Most characters exhibit growth, and don't do stupid stuff.Lots of stories out there, the characters are plot-stupid. They do stupid things simply because the plot calls for it.If someone does something stupid in this game, it's usually because the character is that juvenile, or that incompetent.Medium intelligent characters behave the way real people do, and smart characters behave as I would expect a smarter person to.Love it, lots of fun.. GRAPHICS- Better than standard RPGmaker, and in the same relative style. Expertly made custom map tiles, enemy sprites, and expressive, evocative character art are among the standouts.- Fantastic art. Whether or not you use the decensor patch, there's a ton of gorgeous, hand-drawn scenes that genuinely impressed me.MUSIC AND SOUND- I'm terrible at reviewing music and sound design, but I will say this: with almost every game, I usually turn the sound off and listen to other music eventually. With Desecration of Wings, the music and sound are used very well, carrying moods and themes expertly, and are an integral, enjoyable, and immersive part of the experience. GAMEPLAY- The difficulty curve of this game is masterful, with tactical options available to suit any battle. The experience curve feels brisk without being too fast, and the characters grow strong as the game continues to challenge them.- I personally didn't find any need to grind, going place to place and not avoiding every battle gave me enough XP, Sols, and TP to meet each challenge as they came.STORY AND WRITING- This is where the game shines. The story is fantastically paced, and does a good job at teaching you about the world without shoving it in your face. - The lens through which the player sees the story is expertly crafted, letting you see through a unique perspective; a perspective that gets to see kindness, growth, and wholesomeness in a cruel, judgmental, and visceral world.- The dialogue is exceptional. The main characters have very distinct character voices, and I could easily tell who was speaking while covering up the face. Information is conveyed at the same time as character development. I would have to say that the dialogue is this game's strongest point, even considering the game's other strong points. - Desecration of Wings has easily one of the most healthy, positive perspectives on sex and romance that I've ever read. Instead of the usual depiction of prostitution as an unfortunate circumstance, a mistake, or immoral, the lens the player views the story through instead shows harsh judgment of sex work as being cruel or immature, and it does so through how the story makes you feel, rather than by explicitly stating it. The game explores sex, romance, love, kinkiness, tenderness, consent, and bodily autonomy with nuances and respect that I've rarely if ever seen in any other media. OVERALL- In summary, Desecration of Wing is an exceptional game that combines well-balanced JRPG-style gameplay with a compelling plot, thoughtful, well-written dialogue, and an elegantly conveyed empathy. I bought this game on sale, but knowing what I do now, I'd have gladly payed full price.. I reccomend this game to those who:a - don't mind some jrpg grinding, (the store page advertises that it's "removing the grind." But I found that's only true if you're aiming for a certain achievement & ending. Whereas if you want the "true" ending, then you have to do some grinding)b - want a jrpg fantasy world that incorporates some lovecraftian horror, (one's soul is just another thing that can, and inevitably will be, destroyed. And that sometimes creates abominations in their place)c - want a "mature" game, (just in case you somehow didn't see an age verification screen. Also, the main protagonist is a sex worker) andd - don't mind if the writing isn't the dev's best, especially early on. (the later two thirds of the story didn't disappoint, especial with the true ending requiring you to complete an old occult ritual to herald the end of the world... sorta, but it's still not Sierra Lee's "A game")Despite the two aforementioned downsides, this game has been an overall positive experience.. My initial impressions of this game are good. Accessible, fun story, and the ***AHEM**** content is well done. B+. TL;DR: Well-written and entertaining characters, which offer a novel viewpoint. (You play as a prostitute and it isn't played for laughs.) The standard RPG gameplay is very competently implemented. The R18 content is a nice addition, but hardly all the game has to offer. The art-style for the R18 content is sadly rather inconsistent.Steam censors the word pro-stitute. ... This is ridiculous. The long version:The items are roughly listed in order of importance to my recommendation.Characters:This game offers a great argument as to why R18 content should be allowed on Steam. It would be nigh-on impossible to really thoroughly tell a story from the perspective of a prostitute otherwise. But because the enforcement is rather lax, we are able to enjoy this gem.The main character (the blue haired one) is the main draw of this game. This is mainly because nobody seems to have ever talked about being a prostitute in a semi-serious way in these kinds of games. Well, nobody that has any talent for writing characters... or dialogue... And that is exactly what Sierra Lee is able to provide. The interactions the protagonist has with her clients before and after the act are honestly the reason I sought all of them out. (More on that later.) The various reasons, motives and circumstances in which the main characters works her trade are not only entertaining, but also shed a different light on prostitution that was quite a bit more benevolent than the main stream. On the other hand, her interactions with her daughter (the red haired one), who has to come to grips with the fact that her mother is a prostitute, constitute the best part of the first half of the game. For once, this particular conflict felt really genuine and relateable. I mean, think about your mother sleeping with men other than your father for money? That's a little weird, right?Sadly, the other characters are a tad more normal and in the bright shining light of the main character and her daughter, this makes them look particularly dull. Luckily, most of the time of the game is spent very much focused on these two, so it hardly matters. The gameplay:At first glance nothing novel happens here and certainly, beyond being competently made, this is nothing outside of RPGMaker norms. The interesting parts lie in the details. The way the gameplay reinforces the world building and story was actually a bit stunning at first. Being quite used to JRPGs, I spent a bit of the beginning grinding up the characters and then went confidently into the first big city and wanted to start buying the shops empty, but... I didn't have any money.Indeed, as the protagonist mentions upon her first encounter with monsters, mobs rarely carry cash. In fact, even those that do won't have much more than 10 bucks on them. The reason I was pleasently surprised at this point, was that it perfectly reinforced the background of the character. The clients I had met thus far made up a good half of my money and the rest of the cash was hard-fought in some dungeon. Prostitution was literally the only thing keeping this woman afloat if she didn't want to go out and risk her life. The price differential between what city folks could afford and her purse on my first trip to town was indeed so large that even hours later I was nowhere near being able to affording more than 2-4 items.Of course, as you become an absurdly powerful fighter your income increases, but it never quite becomes staggering. At the end of the game I was still going out to grind for money, because there were still things to buy that I wanted and actual labor was the only option for me to get to those items.Ultimately, I wouldn't just say the regular RPG mechanics are implemented well---Hell, they come with RPGMaker! That's hardly effort!---I would rather say: The mechanics are tuned in a way that shows that the creator thought about what the mechanics mean for their world and story.Story:The story is nothing to write home about in my opinion. Yes, it takes some odd turns and it is not entirely straightforward, mainly because of our peculiar characters. But it is nothing you wouldn't expect when picking up a decent fantasy RPG.What I want to praise are instead the sidequest! They are genuinely interesting! I also believe that this is due to the novel viewpoint of the protagonist and the R18 content. After all: erotica is a decent reward. They also serve to flesh out the protagonist's daily life, as many of them are about difficult clients. Learning is fun, and these sidequest teach you more about her job than just the sex part.Drawbacks:The main drawback I see is that the R18 content is not very consistent and honestly, did not excite me much in almost all cases. It seems most of the budget went into the scenes with the protagonist, who gets a lot of good looking CGs, but the other characters suffer for it. The textbox of an RPGMaker game is also the opposite of a good delivery vehicle for erotica, so you are out of luck on that front as well. In the end I came to this game mainly because I played Sierra Lee's free offering (The Last Sovereign), liked its story and I wanted to grind... I ended up playing it for the characters. Honestly, it is a little weird, that Sierra Lee's solo games are currently better as games than as erotica, but I am not complaining. As for its length, the game is probably about 10 hours long, if you don't care too much about sidequests, and around 20 if you really want to do everything. For some, this value to time ratio is too low, but I am quite happy. It might also get a bit grindy if you insist on teaching all available skills to all party members. That said, the grind in this game is rather quick. I finished the game with level 99 characters and did about 90% of what this game has to offer, which took me roughly 18 hours. Conclusion:Play this game if: You like short RPGs that aren't heavy on grind, you've always been interested in the life of a prostitute or just want a good fantasy story to plow through in a weekend. I want more of this and I want it to be properly advertised on Steam. Without sex we can't talk about the entirety of the human experience and that matters to me.. Good story. Interesting characters. Challenging combat. Tentacle sex. What's not to love?
